PACK NO TRASH FROM THE START
The Philippines already has a serious trash problem, so avoid adding more waste to natural areas or any other places. One way to do this is by not bringing things that become or generate trash. Not only does this help preserve natural areas, but it also promotes good habits that can be applied to daily life. Here's a guide to help you pack no trash on your next outdoor adventure.
1. Choose Reusable Items
Instead of using disposable items like paper plates, plastic utensils, and tissues, opt for reusable items like cloth napkins, reusable utensils, and plates. Bring a reusable water bottle instead of disposable plastic bottles.
2. Pack Food Wisely
Avoid individually wrapped snacks and pre-packaged foods that generate excess waste. Pack food in reusable containers and bring only the amount of food you'll need to avoid leftovers.
Plastic wrappers and food leftovers are not just unsightly. They can also cause many negative impacts on the environment and the wildlife. Bring them home with you.
3. Avoid Single-Use Packaging
Choose products that come in reusable packaging, and avoid single-use plastic packaging like plastic bags, plastic wrap, and plastic containers.
Only a very small fraction of the materials that can be recycled are actually recycled. The majority of them end up in landfills, oceans and other places where they can harm the environment and the wildlife.
4. Practice Responsible Toileting
Use designated restrooms or latrines if available. If not, dispose of human waste properly. Bring a small trowel to dig a hole as far away from water sources as possible, and bury your waste. Use water for cleaning instead of toilet paper or wet wipes.
SAY NO TO TISSUES
Tissue products, such as toilet paper and wet wipes, may seem convenient, but they come at a high cost to the environment. They contribute to deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, and pollution. Be a responsible consumer and say no to tissues.
5. Be Mindful Of Your Trash
Carry a small plastic bag to collect any trash you do generate. Make sure to pack out all trash, including food scraps, wrappers, and cigarette butts. Don't leave any evidence of your presence anywhere between your home and the natural areas you visit.
NO BOUNDARIES
Your home and the natural areas you visit are part of the same environment. They are not separated by boundaries. Maintain the cleanliness of both and everything in between. Don’t leave any trash along the way.
